About the Event
Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway / Kentucky Fried Camping Edition
Embark on an unforgettable journey through one of the Southeast’s most breathtaking regions—the legendary Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway (DBBB)! Venture Unknown invites you to experience the thrill of exploring the rugged beauty of the Red River Gorge and the expansive wilderness of Daniel Boone National Forest.
This moderate yet exhilarating off-road adventure is designed for high-clearance 4x4 vehicles, offering an exciting blend of terrain: one-third gravel, one-third trail, and one-third asphalt. Every mile promises a unique challenge and stunning scenery. This is the easier of the 2 DBBB trips this year.
Highlights of the DBBB Adventure:
Navigate the serene waters of Spaas Creek.
Conquer the rocky landscapes of Old Fincastle Rock.
Tackle the always fun Pumpkin Hollow. These are just a few of the iconic landmarks you’ll encounter on a journey filled with stories you’ll cherish long after the dust settles.
Guiding you every step of the way is Sean Clark, Venture Unknown's experienced lead guide and founder. With a deep knowledge of the route and its history, Sean will enhance your journey with fascinating tales, expert tips, and a passion for off-road exploration. Under his guidance, you’ll gain new skills while forging a deeper connection with the natural world.
Camp, Connect, and Conquer Your adventure begins at our designated rally camp, where we’ll gather, prepare, and set out as a team into the wild. The DBBB is not just a trail—it’s a journey through history, a test of skill, and an opportunity to connect with the land, the trail, and each other.
Are you ready to tackle the DBBB and make memories that will last a lifetime? Pack your gear, fire up your rig, and join us on this epic exploration into the unknown.
NOTE:
Kentucky Fried Camping will be the easier of two DBBB trips. If you are looking for more challenging, then look into our DBBB "Into the Wild" trip that is scheduled Oct 23rd-26th

Difficulty
VU Level 3
This journey has a few spots in it that give it a VU3 rating. Pumpkin Hollow can be a decent challenge of about 500 yard uphill muddy and rocky challenge. There is a possibility for wheel rash and pin stripes. 85% of the route can be done in a mild built 4x4. The other 15% is only moderate and we have had Subarus and stock Land Rovers make it up Pumpkin Hollow. Please refer to rig requirements for minimal mods needed. Seat times may be from 8-10 hours. Dispersed camps are planned but may require exploration to find.
